Extract from the news sheet JULY 1965 – Memories of a wet club 50.
The morning started innocently enough, but some of the older hands cast doubting
looks in the direction of those light delicate – looking clouds high on the western
horizon. They had obviously seen such things before! Everyone started in dry
conditions, with a bit of pale watery sun for most of us. But this was quickly transformed
. By the time even the first starter had reached Holmes Chapel, the weedy sun had
given way to a bank of low threatening cloud and as quickly again to rain. It was quit
e gentle at first, for all of two minutes, before it really let us know its strength. Once it
had decided it was going to let us know all about it, we were all drenched and soaked
to the skin. This brought about a startling change in the riders. No longer did they
look immaculate members of a fit fraternity, but looked distinctly mucky and unhappy
, looking feverishly for some legitimate excuse for packing. Bill Hamm was first to
achieve this distinction, even though it took two goes at unscrewing his cotterless
chainset before it became sufficiently bad to pack with dignity.
Shortly afterwards, Ernie Joules, no doubt after riding through all the loose
flints and gravel he could find, succeeded in puncturing, the third time in five events!
As he was changing his tyre to ride back to the start, a red and yellow clad imp rushed
past in the opposite direction pouring out a torrent of abuse at the unfortunate gent.
When Ernie reached Manor Lane, he had a brief chat with Fred Gratton, deviser in
chief of this torture, during the course of which a bedraggled Mike Stanley arrived
and announced his intention of retiring. .He was quickly put right on this score, that
he would not be allowed to pack without achieving some honourable means of doing
so. He had to be put back on his machine and pushed in the general direction of the
finish. Next to arrive was Dave Moss, who proved to be made of less stern stuff than
Mike. No amount of ’persuasion’ would make him get back on his steed and finish
the course, making the excuse that he was riding a ‘25’ on the following day. Ernie
and Dave then got into Bill Clayton’s van which conveniently happened to be passing
by, and set off round the course in search of Mr Moss Sen. who had Dave’s clothes in
his car. The search proved fruitless or perhaps Dave’s dad had heard that he had
packed, and so three spectators and two packers returned to the start to await the
arrival of those who had been unfortunate enough to go all the way round. The two
packers sat back in comfort, whilst Mr & Mrs Clayton and the redoubtable ‘Crasher
’ Jones prepared toast and tea for them.
Eventually the riders came speeding in to the finish and after all the
speculation the race was won by Brian Gourley, and the Handicaps by Warren
Francis and Stan Griffiths. Before the event was over Ernie’s day was made
complete by the news that the red and yellow clad imp, who had earlier criticised
Ernie’s choice of tyres , had had the misfortune to have the wind escape rapidly from
his back tyre whilst he was cornering, thereby causing him to fall off his machine and
disappear into a hedge, in the process of which he tore his shorts badly enough to
require a new pair. Perhaps Ernie isn’t the only one to use poor tyres. Still its hard
luck Jeff, you should have done it earlier and saved the fag of going all the way round.
